National vector-borne disease control programme: Malaria, Kala-azar, Dengue

PSM High-Yield: NVBDCP

The National Vector-Borne Disease Control Programme (NVBDCP) is an umbrella programme for the prevention and control of vector-borne diseases, including Malaria, Kala-azar, Dengue, Chikungunya, Japanese Encephalitis, and Lymphatic Filariasis.

Disease Overview & Targets

Disease Vector Key Strategy
Malaria Anopheles Early Diagnosis & Complete Treatment (EDCT), IRS, LLINs.
Kala-azar Sandfly Indoor Residual Spraying (IRS), early diagnosis with rK39, single-dose AmBisome.
Dengue Aedes aegypti Vector control (source reduction), case management, and community participation.

High-Yield Prevention Pearls

  • Malaria Elimination: India targets malaria elimination by 2030.
  • Kala-azar Elimination: Defined as <1 case per 10,000 population at the sub-district level. India is in the elimination phase.
  • Dengue/Chikungunya: No vaccine/specific drug; management is purely supportive, and prevention relies on “Break the Breeding Cycle” (container management).
High-Yield Exam Pearl:

  • Vector Habits: *Aedes* bites during the day; *Anopheles* and *Culex* bite at dusk/night.
  • Kala-azar: Remember the use of rK39 dipstick test for field-level diagnosis and Miltefosine/AmBisome for treatment.
