2. The Principle of the Test
In a true drowning (ante-mortem), the victim inhales water into the alveoli. The pressure of drowning forces diatoms across the damaged alveolar-capillary membrane and into the systemic circulation, where they are deposited in organs like the brain, kidneys, and bone marrow.
