Dental, Radiographic, and Mandibular Markers

1. Dental Eruption & Development

  • Deciduous (Primary) Teeth: Erupt between 6 months and 2 years (approx. 20 teeth).
  • Permanent Teeth: Begin eruption at age 6; “6-year molar” (1st molar) is a key landmark. Full permanent dentition (32 teeth) is usually achieved by age 18-21 (3rd molars).
  • Gustafson’s Method: Uses 6 regressive changes in teeth (attrition, periodontitis, secondary dentin, cementum apposition, root resorption, and transparency of root dentin) to estimate age in adults.

2. Radiographic Markers (X-Rays)

  • Gold Standard: Epiphyseal fusion of bones (e.g., iliac crest, clavicle, or wrist) is most reliable for < 25 years.
  • Third Molar: The eruption/development of the wisdom tooth is the most important forensic marker for estimating age in the 17–21 year bracket.
  • Mandible in Old Age: Characterized by resorption of alveolar processes (edentulous jaw), reduction of the vertical height of the mandibular body, and an increase in the gonial angle.
  • Legal Significance: Age determination is critical in juvenile justice (JJ Act) to differentiate between a “child” (< 18) and an adult.
