Facultative anaerobes are microorganisms capable of surviving in both aerobic and anaerobic conditions. These organisms can switch between using oxygen as the terminal electron acceptor when available or relying on fermentation and other oxygen-independent metabolic pathways when oxygen is scarce.
Pathway | Description |
---|---|
Aerobic Respiration | Alternative electron acceptors (e.g., nitrate, sulfate) are used instead of oxygen to generate ATP. |
Fermentation | Converts sugars into energy anaerobically, producing lactic acid, ethanol, or other by-products. |
Anaerobic Respiration | Uses alternative electron acceptors (e.g., nitrate, sulfate) instead of oxygen to generate ATP. |
