Learning Objectives
Master the Chronological Milestones of Early Embryonic Development. Understand the transitions from fertilization to the formation of the trilaminar disc and organogenesis, focusing on the high-yield “Rule of 2s and 3s” for the USMLE Step 1.
1. Week 1: Fertilization to Implantation
The first week is defined by rapid cell division and the journey from the fallopian tube to the uterine wall.
| Timeline | Event & Description |
|---|---|
| Day 0 | Fertilization occurs in the ampulla of the fallopian tube. Formation of the Zygote (2N2C). |
| Days 2–4 | Cleavage results in the Morula (a solid ball of cells). |
| Day 6 | The Blastocyst “sticks” (implantation begins). hCG secretion begins at this time. |
2. Weeks 2–3: The “Rule of 2s and 3s.”
These weeks focus on the structural organization of the embryo into layers.
| Week | Key Structural Changes |
|---|---|
| Week 2 | Formation of the Bilaminar disc. Two layers: Epiblast and Hypoblast. |
| Week 3 | Formation of the Trilaminar disc via Gastrulation. Three layers: Ectoderm, Mesoderm, Endoderm. |
Note: The Notochord arises from the midline mesoderm and induces the overlying ectoderm to become the Neural Plate via Sonic Hedgehog (SHH) signaling.
3. Weeks 4–8: Organogenesis
During this period, major organ systems begin to function and take shape.
| Week | Milestone |
|---|---|
| Week 4 | The Heart begins to beat (4 chambers). Limb buds (4 limbs) begin to form. |
| Week 8 | Fetal movements begin. Genitalia show distinct male/female characteristics. |
Activity
High-Yield Mnemonics & Tips:
- The Rule of 2s (Week 2): 2 layers (Epiblast, Hypoblast); 2 cavities (Amniotic, Yolk sac); 2 components of placenta (Cytotrophoblast, Syncytiotrophoblast).
- The Rule of 3s (Week 3): 3 germ layers (Ectoderm, Mesoderm, Endoderm).
- Week 4 = 4: 4 heart chambers; 4 limb buds.
- “Geneightalia”: Genitalia characteristics are visible by Week 8.
- Clinical Note: hCG is detectable in maternal blood around Day 8 and in urine around Day 14 (coinciding with the first missed period).
