Learning Objectives
- Distinguish between Type I (Slow-twitch) and Type II (Fast-twitch) muscle fibers.
- Correlate metabolic pathways (Oxidative vs. Glycolytic) with muscle color and endurance.
- Explain the phenomenon of muscle fiber type grouping in the context of nerve injury.
1. Comparative Anatomy of Muscle Fibers
Skeletal muscle is composed of two main types of fibers, usually mixed. Their proportions vary depending on the muscle’s primary function (e.g., postural vs. explosive movement).
| Feature | Type I (Slow-Twitch) | Type II (Fast-Twitch) |
|---|---|---|
| Contraction Velocity | Slow | Fast |
| Fiber Color | Red | White |
| Predominant Metabolism | Oxidative phosphorylation | Anaerobic glycolysis |
| Mitochondria & Myoglobin | Increased (High) | Decreased (Low) |
| Training Type | Endurance (Marathons, posture) | Weightlifting, sprinting |

2. Metabolism and Endurance
The physiological differences between these fibers dictate how long a muscle can work before fatiguing.
- Type I (Red): High myoglobin (which carries oxygen) and high mitochondrial density allow for sustained contraction without fatigue. Think of the dark meat in a chicken (legs used for standing/walking).
- Type II (White): Low myoglobin and mitochondria. These rely on stored glycogen for quick bursts of energy but fatigue quickly due to lactic acid buildup. Think of the white meat in a chicken (breast used for a brief flight).
Clinical Notes & Corrections:
- Fiber Type Grouping: In a healthy muscle, fiber types are distributed in a “checkerboard” pattern. Following denervation and reinnervation, a single surviving motor neuron will sprout and adopt all the surrounding fibers, converting them all to its own type. This results in large clusters of the same fiber type (grouping).
- Atrophy: Type II fibers are typically the first to atrophy in cases of disuse (immobilization) or corticosteroid use.
Activity: Muscle Fiber Identification Challenge
Memory Hooks:
Type I: 1 slow red ox (1=Type I, Slow-twitch, Red color, Oxidative).
Type II: 2 fast white antelopes (2=Type II, Fast-twitch, White color, Glycolytic).
