1. Types of Fractures

2. High-Yield Forensic Pearls
- Butterfly Fracture: A specific type of comminuted fracture involving triangular bone fragments, often indicating the point of impact.
- Hinged Fracture: A horizontal fracture crossing the base of the skull, splitting it into two halves; characteristic of severe vertical compression.
- Internal Beveling: In gunshot wounds, the entry hole is typically smaller and beveled internally; the exit hole is larger and beveled externally (The “Coning” Effect).
- Vitality: Ante-mortem fractures show hemorrhage into the fracture line and surrounding soft tissues; post-mortem fractures are “clean” with no associated hemorrhage or tissue reaction.
- Puppe’s Rule: When multiple fractures intersect, the line of a later fracture will terminate at the line of a pre-existing fracture.
