The Hepatic Portal Vein

The portal vein is the primary vessel responsible for carrying nutrient-rich, deoxygenated blood from the gastrointestinal tract and spleen to the liver for processing.

Formation and Tributaries

The portal vein is formed posterior to the neck of the pancreas by the union of two major veins:

  • Superior Mesenteric Vein (SMV): Drains the small intestine and proximal colon.
  • Splenic Vein: Drains the spleen and receives the Inferior Mesenteric Vein (IMV) (which drains the distal colon).
