Pelvic anatomy X Ray

High-Yield Pelvic Anatomy (Radiographic Focus)

Key Radiographic Landmarks (AP Pelvis)

Structure Radiographic Feature
Shenton’s Line Smooth arc formed by the medial edge of the femoral neck and the superior border of the obturator foramen.
Iliopectineal Line Indicates the anterior column of the acetabulum.
Ilioischial Line Indicates the posterior column of the acetabulum.
Acetabulum Check for concentricity of the femoral head within the acetabular cup.

NEET PG “Must-Know” Clinical Pearls

  • Shenton’s Line Disruption: Indicates hip dislocation or femoral neck fracture.
  • Pelvic Ring Fractures: The pelvis acts like a ring; if there is one fracture, there is usually a second (or a ligamentous disruption) elsewhere in the ring.
  • Sacroiliac (SI) Joint: Evaluate for symmetry and joint space narrowing (e.g., in Ankylosing Spondylitis).
  • Pubic Symphysis: Normal distance in adults is generally < 5-6 mm; widening suggests diastasis.
  • Lesser Sciatic Foramen: Bounded by the sacrotuberous and sacrospinous ligaments; passage for the pudendal nerve.
