Mummification is a form of post-mortem tissue preservation characterized by extreme dehydration (desiccation). Because moisture is essential for the bacterial growth required for putrefaction, the removal of water essentially “halts” the decomposition process.
2. Environmental Requirements
For mummification to occur, the environment must facilitate rapid evaporation of fluids. Key conditions include:
- High Ambient Temperature: Accelerates evaporation.
- Low Humidity (Dryness): Allows moisture to leave the body.
- Good Air Flow: Facilitates the removal of water vapor (e.g., attics, desert environments).
3. Forensic Characteristics

- Differential Diagnosis: Distinguish from Adipocere (which requires moisture) and typical Putrefaction (which requires active bacterial degradation).
