NEET PG High-Yield: Mortality Indicators
Mortality indicators are critical measures of population health status. Distinguishing between rates, ratios, and proportions is a frequent testing point.
Key Mortality Indicators
| Indicator | Calculation/Context |
|---|---|
| Crude Death Rate (CDR) | Total deaths in a year / Mid-year population (per 1,000). |
| Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) | Deaths < 1 yr / Total live births (per 1,000). The most sensitive indicator of health status. |
| Maternal Mortality Ratio (MMR) | Maternal deaths / Total live births (per 100,000). Technically, a ratio, not a rate. |
| Case Fatality Rate (CFR) | Deaths from disease / Total cases of that disease (%). |
High-Yield NEET PG Pearls:
- Proportional Mortality Rate: Deaths from a specific cause / Total deaths (%). Does not indicate risk.
- Neonatal Mortality Rate (NMR): Deaths < 28 days / 1,000 live births. Accounts for the majority of IMR.
- Survival Rate: Survivors of a disease / Total cases. Used in chronic disease evaluation (e.g., cancer).
- Standardization: Used to compare mortality rates between populations with different age/sex distributions (Direct vs. Indirect).
