The Middle Ear (Tympanic Cavity)

The middle ear is an air-filled space located within the temporal bone. Its primary function is to act as an impedance-matching transformer, converting low-pressure sound waves in the air into high-pressure vibrations in the fluid of the inner ear.

Key Components

  • Ossicular Chain: Three small bones (malleus, incus, stapes) that bridge the gap from the tympanic membrane to the oval window.
  • Eustachian Tube: Connects the middle ear to the nasopharynx, responsible for pressure equalization and drainage of middle ear secretions.
  • Muscles: The Tensor Tympani (innervated by CN V3) and Stapedius (innervated by CN VII). They contract in response to loud sounds (the acoustic reflex) to protect the inner ear.
