Submucosal Resection (SMR) of the nasal septum is a traditional surgical procedure to correct a deviated nasal septum (DNS). Laser-assisted techniques have been introduced to modify or replace traditional methods for specific cases of turbinate or septal hypertrophy.
1. Clinical Application
- Used primarily for nasal turbinate hypertrophy (Laser-Assisted Turbinoplasty) rather than formal septal SMR, which usually requires physical resection of cartilage/bone.
- Lasers (commonly KTP, Diode, or Nd: YAG) are used to induce submucosal fibrosis and subsequent shrinkage of the soft tissue.
