kVp vs. mAs: Radiology Physics Essentials

1. Definitions

  • kVp (Kilovoltage Peak): The maximum voltage applied across the X-ray tube. It determines the quality (energy/penetrating power) of the X-ray beam.
  • mAs (Milliampere-Seconds): The product of tube current (mA) and exposure time (s). It determines the quantity (number of photons) of the X-ray beam.

  • Penetration: Higher kVp is required for denser body parts (e.g., abdomen, skull) to ensure adequate beam penetration through the tissue.
