The Inferior Mesenteric Artery (IMA)
The IMA is the final major anterior branch of the abdominal aorta, originating at the L3 vertebral level. It provides the primary blood supply to the hindgut (distal 1/3 of the transverse colon, descending colon, sigmoid colon, and rectum).

Clinical Significance: Watershed Areas
The anastomosis between the IMA and SMA makes the colon vulnerable to ischemia at two specific points:
- Griffith’s Point (Splenic Flexure): Anastomosis between the middle colic (SMA) and left colic (IMA).
- Sudeck’s Point: Critical zone where the superior rectal artery (IMA) meets the middle/inferior rectal arteries (internal iliac).
