Forensic Pathology: Thermal Alterations to Muscle

1. Clinical Concept

Heat stiffening (or heat coagulation) is the irreversible rigid state of muscles resulting from exposure to high temperatures (typically above 65^\circ\text{C} to 70^\circ\text{C}), such as in a fire. This occurs due to the **coagulation of muscle proteins** (myosin and actin), which causes the muscle fibers to shrink and shorten.

2. Distinguishing from Rigor Mortis

3. Forensic High-Yield Pearls

  • “Pugilistic Attitude”: Heat stiffening causes the muscles of the limbs to contract and shorten, drawing the arms into a “boxer’s pose” (flexion at elbows, wrists, and knees). This is a thermal artifact and does not indicate defensive posturing.
  • Dissection Insight: Heat-stiffened muscles will appear pale, dry, and brittle (coagulated) rather than the normal red, pliable appearance of muscle fibers.
  • Forensic Trap: Investigators must not mistake the “pugilistic attitude” for evidence of a struggle or intent to fight; it is purely a physical consequence of exposure to intense heat.
