Anatomy of the Heart Chambers

The heart is a four-chambered muscular organ that functions as a dual pump, circulating blood through the pulmonary and systemic circuits.

Chamber Functionality

Chamber Function/Description
Right Atrium (RA) Receives deoxygenated blood from the SVC, IVC, and coronary sinus.
Right Ventricle (RV) Pumps deoxygenated blood to the lungs via the pulmonary trunk. Thinner wall than the LV.
Left Atrium (LA) Receives oxygenated blood from the four pulmonary veins. Forms the base of the heart.
Left Ventricle (LV) Pumps oxygenated blood to the systemic circulation via the aorta. Highly muscular wall.

Key Anatomical Relationships

  • Base of Heart: Primarily formed by the Left Atrium. Enlargement of the LA can compress the esophagus, causing dysphagia.
  • Apex of Heart: Formed by the inferolateral part of the Left Ventricle; typically located at the 5th intercostal space, mid-clavicular line.
  • Sternocostal Surface: Primarily formed by the Right Ventricle.

The left ventricle is the most powerful pump of the heart. Because it maintains high systemic blood pressure, it is the most common site for hypertrophy in chronic hypertension and the most frequent site for myocardial infarction.
