Health promotional measures

NEET PG High-Yield: Health Promotion

Health promotion is the process of enabling people to increase control over, and to improve, their health. It is the first level of the Levels of Prevention.

Key Components

  • Health Education: Creating awareness regarding lifestyle choices, hygiene, and disease prevention.
  • Environmental Modification: Improving sanitation, clean water supply, and housing conditions.
  • Nutritional Intervention: Programs addressing malnutrition (e.g., Mid-day Meal Scheme, ICDS, supplementation).
  • Lifestyle Modification: Encouraging physical activity and discouraging tobacco/alcohol use.
  • Genetic Counseling: Providing information and support to individuals at risk of hereditary conditions.

Levels of Prevention (The “Leavell & Clark” Model)

Level Focus
Primary Health Promotion & Specific Protection (e.g., Immunization).
Secondary Early Diagnosis & Prompt Treatment.
Tertiary Disability Limitation & Rehabilitation.
High-Yield NEET PG Pearls:

  • Distinction: Health promotion is directed toward the general population (non-specific), whereas specific protection targets specific diseases.
  • Ottawa Charter (1986): The milestone document defining the core strategies of health promotion (e.g., build healthy public policy, create supportive environments).
  • Scope: Unlike clinical medicine, health promotion addresses the determinants of health (social, economic, and environmental).
