Diagnostic Nasal Endoscopy (DNE) is the gold standard for clinical evaluation of the nasal cavity and nasopharynx. It has largely replaced traditional anterior rhinoscopy due to superior visualization.
1. Clinical Utility
- Evaluation of chronic rhinosinusitis (checking for mucopurulent discharge in the middle meatus).
- Visualization of the nasopharynx (screening for nasopharyngeal carcinoma or adenoid hypertrophy).
- Localization of epistaxis sources.
- Assessment of nasal polyps and response to steroid therapy.
2. Anatomical Landmarks (The “Must-See”)

- Anesthesia: DNE typically requires topical decongestion (e.g., oxymetazoline) and local anesthesia (e.g., lidocaine) for patient comfort.
- Rigid vs. Flexible: Rigid endoscopes provide superior image resolution; flexible endoscopes are better for patients with anatomical limitations or for evaluating dynamic airway function (e.g., velopharyngeal incompetence).
- Documentation: Essential for monitoring disease progression in inflammatory conditions like nasal polyposis.
