The Basement Membrane Zone (BMZ)
The BMZ is the critical, complex junctional area between the epidermis and the dermis. It provides structural integrity and acts as a selective barrier. Disruption here is the hallmark of subepidermal blistering disorders.

Pathophysiological Significance
- Anchoring Fibrils: Composed primarily of Type VII Collagen, they attach the Lamina Densa to the underlying dermis. Defects here lead to Dystrophic Epidermolysis Bullosa.
- Autoimmune Targeting: In subepidermal bullous diseases, autoantibodies (IgG) target specific proteins at the BMZ.
- Bullous Pemphigoid: IgG binds to BP180 (also known as Type XVII Collagen) in the hemidesmosome, leading to loss of attachment and tense bulla formation.
