Bacterial growth curve

 

When bacteria are introduced into a new, closed environment (batch culture), they exhibit a characteristic pattern of growth over time, typically divided into four distinct phases.

 

Phase Description
Lag Phase Metabolic activity is high; bacteria are adapting to the new environment, synthesizing necessary enzymes and molecules, but not yet actively dividing.
Log (Exponential) Phase Rapid, constant cell division (binary fission). This is when bacteria are most susceptible to antibiotics that target cell wall/protein synthesis.
Stationary Phase The rate of cell growth equals the rate of cell death due to nutrient depletion and toxic waste accumulation. Spore formation may begin here.
Death Phase The rate of cell death exceeds the rate of growth. Cells may persist as viable but non-culturable or die off entirely.

Clinical Correlation

Antibiotics that target cell wall synthesis or DNA replication, such as beta-lactams, are most effective during the Log Phase when active multiplication is occurring.
