Anthracosis, or Coal Worker’s Pneumoconiosis (CWP), is caused by the chronic inhalation of coal dust. It represents a major occupational hazard in the mining industry.

  • Pathogenesis: Accumulation of coal dust particles in the lungs leads to the formation of “coal macules” and subsequently “coal nodules.”
  • Simple CWP: Presence of coal macules; often asymptomatic or mild exertional dyspnea.
  • Complicated CWP (Progressive Massive Fibrosis): Development of large, blackened, fibrotic masses (often >1 cm) causing significant respiratory impairment and pulmonary hypertension.
