2. Medico-Legal Importance
- Directionality: In a graze, epithelial tags are often heaped up at the end of the injury, indicating the direction of the force.
- Vitality: Ante-mortem abrasions usually show serum exudation (crusting), while post-mortem abrasions appear pale, parchment-like, and lack associated vital reactions like inflammation.
- Age Estimation:
- Bright Red: Fresh.
- Red-Brown (Scab formation): 12–24 hours.
- Epithelialization: Several days.
3. High-Yield Forensic Pearls
- Patterned Abrasions: These are gold mines for investigators, as they can reproduce the “negative” of the striking object (e.g., radiator grill pattern, tire tread).
- Differential Diagnosis: Must be distinguished from skin conditions like impetigo or contact dermatitis, which lack the traumatic mechanism.
- Evidence Collection: Always document abrasions using scale markers; their precise location and orientation are vital for reconstructing the dynamics of an assault or vehicular collision.
