The school began in 1854 at Atlanta Medical College. In 1898, Atlanta Medical College merged with the Southern Medical College (founded in 1878) to form the Atlanta College of Physicians and Surgeons. The college then merged in 1913 with the Atlanta School of Medicine (founded in 1905) under the name Atlanta Medical College. In 1915, the school became Emory University School of Medicine.
