Minute Ventilation (VE)

Definition: Minute ventilation is the total volume of gas entering the lungs per minute.
Calculation: VE=VT×RRVE = VT \times RRVE=VT×RR where:
- VE = Minute ventilation
- VT = Tidal volume (volume of air per breath)
- RR = Respiratory rate (breaths per minute)

Normal Values:

Respiratory Rate (RR): 12–20 breaths/min
Tidal Volume (VT): 500 mL/breath
Dead Space (VD): 150 mL/breath

Alveolar Ventilation (VA)

Definition: Alveolar ventilation is the volume of gas that reaches the alveoli each minute, which is critical for effective gas exchange.
Calculation: VA=(VT−VD)×RRVA = (VT – VD) \times RRVA=(VT−VD)×RR where:
- VA = Alveolar ventilation
- VD = Physiologic dead space (volume of air that does not participate in gas exchange)

Points to Remember:

Minute Ventilation gives an overall measure of the air entering the lungs, but not all of this air is available for gas exchange.
Alveolar Ventilation is a more accurate measure of the air available for gas exchange since it subtracts the dead space.
Dead Space refers to the portion of each breath that does not participate in gas exchange (e.g., air remaining in the conducting airways).
