Total Body Water (TBW) refers to the sum of all fluids within the human body. It is divided into two main compartments: the Intracellular Fluid (ICF) and the Extracellular Fluid (ECF), with each having distinct components and functions.
Membranes act as selective barriers between different compartments, regulating the movement of substances across them.
Compartment | Proportion of Total Body Water | Additional Notes |
---|---|---|
Intracellular Fluid (ICF) | ~2/3 | Found within cells |
Extracellular Fluid (ECF) | ~1/3 | Divided into ISF and PV |
Interstitial Fluid (ISF) | ~3/4 of ECF | Fluid between cells |
Plasma Volume (PV) | ~1/4 of ECF | Fluid within blood vessels |
Vascular Compartment | Blood volume (plasma + red cells) | Includes both plasma and blood cells |
