Staphylococcus epidermidis is a Gram-positive, catalase-positive, coagulase-negative cocci that is part of the normal skin flora. It commonly causes infections associated with prosthetic devices, catheters, and heart valves due to its ability to form biofilms. It is typically novobiocin-sensitive and an important cause of nosocomial infections.
