Staphylococcus aureus is a Gram-positive, catalase-positive, coagulase-positive cocci that forms golden-yellow colonies. It causes a range of infections, from skin abscesses and pneumonia to toxic shock syndrome and food poisoning. Its virulence factors include protein A, coagulase, and toxins such as TSST-1 and exfoliative toxin. Methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) is notable for β-lactam antibiotic resistance.
