Bacterial endotoxins are lipopolysaccharide (LPS) molecules found in the outer membrane of Gram-negative bacteria. The lipid A component is toxic and responsible for activating macrophages and the complement system, leading to fever, hypotension, disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC), and septic shock.
