Encapsulated bacteria possess an outer polysaccharide capsule that protects them from phagocytosis, enhancing their virulence. Important examples include Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae type b, Neisseria meningitidis, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Salmonella, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, E. coli, and Group B Streptococcus.
