U01.21.022 Stroke Volume (SV)

Learning Objective:
Understand and apply the formula for stroke volume (SV), which measures the volume of blood ejected by the heart with each beat.

Formula:

SV = EDV - ESV

Explanation:

  • EDV = End-Diastolic Volume (volume of blood in the ventricle at the end of filling)
  • ESV = End-Systolic Volume (volume of blood remaining in the ventricle after contraction)
  • SV represents the actual amount of blood pumped by the heart per beat.

Example:

Given:
EDV = 120 \text{ mL}
ESV = 50 \text{ mL}

SV = 120 - 50 = 70 \text{ mL}

Answer: Stroke Volume = 70 mL
