U01.21.010 Relative Risk Reduction (RRR)

Learning Objective:
Understand and apply the formula for calculating Relative Risk Reduction (RRR), which expresses the proportional decrease in risk between an untreated (control) group and a treated (or exposed) group.

Formula:

RRR = frac{AR_C - AR_T}{AR_C}

Explanation:

  • AR_C = Absolute risk in the control (untreated) group
  • AR_T = Absolute risk in the treatment (or exposed) group

RRR quantifies the proportion of risk reduced by the treatment or exposure compared to baseline risk in the control group.

Example:

Given:

  • AR_C = 0.2 (20% risk in control group)
  • AR_T = 0.05 (5% risk in treated group)

RRR = frac{0.2 - 0.05}{0.2} = frac{0.15}{0.2} = 0.75

Answer: Relative Risk Reduction = 75%
→ Treatment reduces the risk by 75% relative to the control group.
