LO: Describe the Freudian psychic structures—id, ego, and superego—and understand their roles in personality, behavior, and conflict resolution.

Id
Definition: The primitive, instinctual part of the psyche.
- Function: Drives basic instincts and desires (sex, aggression).
- Characteristics:
- Present at birth
- Operates according to the pleasure principle (“what we want to do”)
Ego
Definition: The rational component that mediates between the id and reality.
- Function: Attempts to accommodate reality and resolve conflicts between the id and the superego.
- Characteristics:
- Rational, realistic, problem-solving
- Seeks long-term benefit over impulsive gratification
- Operates according to the reality principle
Superego
Definition: The moral and ethical component of the psyche.
- Function: Dictates conscience and socially acceptable behavior (“what we ought to do”).
- Characteristics:
- Develops by age 5
- Learned from caretakers and society
- Can be punitive or overly demanding, leading to internal conflict
