M04.10.003 FSH and Sertoli Cells

Learning Objective:

Understand the mechanism of FSH action on Sertoli cells, the role of inhibin B in feedback regulation, and its significance in male reproductive physiology.

The Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) binds to Sertoli cells and activates a Gs-cAMP signaling pathway. This pathway stimulates Sertoli cells to support spermatogenesis and release inhibin B.

Inhibin B acts via negative feedback on the anterior pituitary to suppress further FSH secretion, helping maintain hormonal balance in the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis.

Clinical Relevance

Measuring serum inhibin B can provide insight into Sertoli cell function and overall spermatogenic activity. Low inhibin B levels may indicate Sertoli cell dysfunction, affecting male fertility.
