Caribbean Medical University (CMU) is a private, for-profit medical school established in 2007, located on the island of Curaçao in the southern Caribbean Sea. The university offers a U.S. curriculum-based Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) program designed to prepare students for medical practice primarily in the United States and Canada.
Campus and Curriculum
CMU’s main campus is situated in the Piscadera Bay area of Willemstad, Curaçao. The M.D. program spans 11 semesters, with three semesters per calendar year. The first four semesters focus on basic sciences and are completed on the Curaçao campus. Following this, students undergo a USMLE review course before proceeding to six semesters (72 weeks) of clinical clerkships at teaching hospitals across the United States. For high school graduates lacking the necessary prerequisites, CMU offers a three-semester pre-medical program on its Curaçao campus.
Accreditation Status
As of July 2018, the Caribbean Accreditation Authority for Education in Medicine and Other Health Professions (CAAM-HP) denied accreditation to CMU.

Student Life and Community
CMU enrolls classes three times a year—January, May, and September—with an average class size of 45 students. The university’s diverse student body benefits from Curaçao’s multilingual environment, where Dutch and Papiamentu are official languages, but English and Spanish are also widely spoken.
Caribbean Medical University provides a pathway for students aiming to pursue a medical career, particularly in the U.S. and Canada. However, individuals considering CMU should thoroughly assess the implications of its accreditation status on their educational and professional objectives.
